MEGHAN SPIELMAN
WORKS
Meghan Spielman is a woven textile artist exploring dynamic interactions between color, material, and structure. Her work is highly process-driven, letting the boundaries of the loom both guide and be pushed.
The historical context of weaving is foundational to Spielman’s research and inspiration, especially its long association with female labor and domestically made, heirloom objects. Often referencing the geometrics of historical American quilts and coverlets, Spielman’s work translates and studies the universal language of pattern. Weaving provides many technical boundaries, but within this framework, there are seemingly endless variations. Starting from the simplicity of a stripe, a gingham, or a check, she is interested in the moments of deviation found within repetition. Ultimately, the works transform these familiar and comforting patterns from the day-to-day, asking us to reflect upon and perhaps re-evaluate our relationship with textiles.
Born and raised in Billings, MT, Spielman lived in NYC for several years working as an artist and a textile designer/colorist for the interior and fashion markets. In 2021 Spielman returned to her roots, establishing her fine art practice and weave studio in Bozeman. Her technical experience and knowledge of weave structure is the foundation of her practice. Each piece is woven by hand on a specialized 32-harness computerized dobby loom.
